What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are thick, swollen, and twisted veins in the legs that protrude from underneath the skin’s surface. This very common occurrence can lead to CVI a more serious medical condition.
What is chronic venous insufficiency?
CVI is a medical condition that progresses over time. The valves that transport the blood from the legs to the heart no longer function and this causes the blood in the legs to pool. The lack of proper blood flow causes the veins in the legs to expand, lose shape, and protrude from underneath the skin. The most common symptoms include pain, leg heaviness, leg swelling, fatigue, skin changes, and ulcers.
How are varicose veins and CVI Treated?
The valves in the legs cannot be repaired, so the only alternative is to re-route the blood flow from the non-working veins to healthy ones. Traditionally this repair was done by stripping (surgically removing) the non-working veins from the leg.
At Vein & Cardiovascular Center we perform a state-of-the art Venefit™ or laser procedures. We simply close off the diseased vein rather than removing it, which is much less invasive and painful. Once it is closed, the vein turns into scar tissue and eventually the body absorbs it.
How are the Venefit™ and laser procedures different from vein stripping?
Vein stripping is a surgical procedure and is usually performed in an operating room under general anesthesia. During vein stripping, a surgeon makes an incision in the groin area and then threads a “stripping tool” through the leg vein in order to pull it out through a second incision just above the calf.
Unlike vein stripping, the Venefit™ and laser procedures are minimally invasive. Rather than making two incisions and removing the veins, during the laser procedure only one small incision is made below the knee. Through the small incision a special catheter is inserted and used to close the non-working veins.
The laser procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local or regional anesthesia.
How long does the Venefit™ or laser procedure take?
The procedure itself lasts approximately 30-45 minutes.
Is the Venefit™ or laser procedure painful?
Due to the local or regional anesthetic numbing the affected area, there will be little feeling, if any during the procedure
How quickly after treatment can I return to normal activities?
The vast majority of patients experience a quick return to normal activities. Your vein specialist may recommend a regular walking regimen and suggest that you refrain from strenuous activities (lifting heavy objects, vigorous exercise) or standing for long periods of time.
How soon after treatment will my symptoms improve?
Most patients report a noticeable improvement in their symptoms within one to two weeks following the procedure.
Is there any scarring or bruising?
Patients report minimal to no scarring, bruising or swelling following the laser procedure.
What potential risks and complications are associated with the Venefit™ or laser procedure?
As with any medical intervention, potential risks and complications exist with the laser procedure. All patients should consult their vein specialist to determine if their conditions present any special risks. Your vein specialist will review potential complications of the laser procedure at the consultation, which can include vessel perforation, thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, phlebitis, hematoma, infection, paresthesia (numbness or tingling) and/or skin burn.
Are the Venefit™ or laser procedures suitable for everyone?
Only a vein specialist can tell you if the Venefit™ or laser procedure is the right option for your vein problem. Experience has shown that many patients with CVI can be treated with the laser procedure.
Is age an important consideration for the Venefit™ or laser procedure?
The most important step in determining whether or not the laser procedure is appropriate for you is a complete ultrasound examination by your vein specialist. Age alone is not a factor in determining whether or not the Venefit™ or laser procedure is appropriate for you. The Venefit™ and laser procedures have been used to treat both women and men across a wide range of ages.
How effective is the Venefit™ or laser procedure?
The Venefit™ and laser procedures have been shown in a large international, multi-center study to be 93% effective over three years.
What happens to the treated vein that is left behind in the leg?
The vein simply becomes fibrous tissue after treatment. Over time, the vein will gradually be completely absorbed into surrounding tissue.
Are the Venefit™ or laser procedures covered by my insurance?
Many insurance companies pay for the Venefit™ or laser procedures in part or in full. The laser procedure has coverage policies with major health insurers. Your vein specialist can discuss your insurance coverage further at the time of consultation.
Do you perform Spider Vein or Reticular vein treatment?
Yes, we offer treatment for Spider & Reticular Veins right in our office.
